Day Three Hundred Forty-Six: The Shining and The Dining

I have never watched The Shining, because, frankly, I'm typically too much of a scaredy cat to watch horror movies (or really even slightly scary movies). But, tonight, I decided it was finally time to see this classic movie. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, but it was creepy, for sure. (And, in the interest of full disclosure, I did shriek once.)

After the movie, Amazon suggested other movies we might want to see based on the one we had just watched. When we came across a short film entiled The Dining, starring Annoying Orange, we couldn't imagine why we wouldn't go ahead and watch that, too.

Let's just say it was two completely different cimematic experiences! 😉

Day Three Hundred Eight: Cine Argentino

I had yet another opportunity to participate in an activity with Jeff's school today: Cine Argentino. Jeff had attended one of these video-viewing events a couple of weeks ago which was apparently quite colorful, and he ended up learning some vocabulary they don't teach in class, although he did report that it was a great way to practice listening to Spanish and to learn more of the culture of Argentina. I was hesitant to go today because I really didn't want to watch a crude movie, but since I very much wanted to get out of the house, I decided at the last minute to walk over to the school and check it out. It turned out to be fine. In honor of the first day of the World Cup, we watched a comedy about a man addicted to watching fútbol (soccer, for those of you in the U.S.) whose wife issues him an ultimatum, which was the movie's namesake: El Fútbol o Yo. With the Spanish subtitles to go along with the Spanish dialogue (and with the predicable plot), I was able to follow along pretty well in my first all-Spanish movie viewing. Woohoo!

Day Two Hundred Ninety: Buying Movie Tickets in a Foreign Country

We had promised the kids a viewing of the new Star Wars movie, Solo, this weekend, and today was the day. After wandering around the city for a while looking for a couple of cabs (because there is no Uber here and because there is no such thing as a taxi big enough to carry all of us in this city), we finally all arrived at the theater across town. Since my group arrived first, it fell to me to buy the tickets. Obviously, this is a bit of a stretch for a First, but it truly was my first time to buy movie tickets in a foreign country and not in my native language, so I'm going to count it. (Admittedly, it was not my first time to see a movie, or even a Star Wars movie, or even a Star Wars movie with Spanish subtitles in a foreign country!)

Day Two Hundred Forty-One: Zombie Movie

I am not now, nor have I ever been, interested in watching zombie movies. The whole concept just doesn't appeal to me. So, imagine my surprise when I sat down to watch the sequel of a perfectly good movie (that had absolutely nothing to do with zombies) only to find that it was in fact a zombie movie. It was disappointing, but at least I got a First out of it.

Day One Hundred Seventy-Six: Groundhog Day Party

When the kids realized that today was Groundhog Day and that it was a Friday, they decided the only thing to do was to have a party. Obviously, the movie Groundhog Day would be the main event. But we took it a couple of steps further with Fuzzy's fajitas and a groundhog cookie cake. I've been to all kinds of parties in my forty years, but I can honestly say I've never been to a Groundhog Day party! We had a blast and made some wonderful memories!

Packing in some extra calories to get us through six more weeks of winter!

Day One Hundred Forty-Eight: Schindler's List

I never have been able to bring myself to watch Schindler's List because I knew many of the scenes would be difficult to endure. But after taking the older kids to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. Jeff and I thought it would be good to watch the movie with them, and we finally had our chance tonight while the younger boys were occupied with a different movie in another part of the house. There are scenes that are difficult to watch, but I think it is worth seeing anyway.

Day One Hundred Twenty-Two: Rogue One

I am not really a fanatical Stars Wars fan, but I have seen all the movies at least once, in the theater, no less. All except one. I missed Rogue One last year, because, according to our family rule, Clay was still too young to see the movies, so I stayed home with him while everyone else went to see it. The older kids have since taken a vote to let Clay into the Stars Wars club a little early, so he's been trying to see all of them before the new one comes out in theaters next week. Since I missed Rogue One, I decided I better get caught up, too. So Max and Clay and I piled into the back seat of the parked car today and watched it on an iPad with a shattered screen. There were several new experiences in there, and a good time was had by all!

Day One Hundred Seven: Mother/Daughter Movie Night

Tonight I got to go the movies with just Ruth and my mom, which has never happened before. We had so much fun hanging out together and seeing Murder on the Orient Express.

I'm so thankful for these lovely ladies and for the chance to spend some quality time with both of them!
