Day Three Hundred Thirty-Four: Bío-Bío Market

Today, we visited the Bío-Bío Market, which is a rabbit warren of shops and stalls, spread out over several blocks. There is everything from fresh produce, meats, and cheeses to homegoods and clothing all intermingled, sometimes in nice enclosed spaces and sometimes out in the open. It was somewhat similar to other markets we've visited in the world but still retained its uniqueness. Some of the most interesting finds of the day were a bin of various broken pastas, a cat cleaning itself in a produce bin, right next to the avocados, and a stack of eggs crammed in next to cheap house shoes. It's definitely a different shopping experience than you would ever find in the States, but it's so fun!

Walmart has nothing on Bío-Bīo!

We were mesmerized by the

Day Two Hundred Eighty-Two: Wild Horses in the Backyard

Rapa Nui is full of wild horses that roam freely around the island. After exploring for several hours and seeing many of the horses, we arrived back at our cabin to find two of them taking shelter from the rain under one of our trees. It was very exciting, though I imagine we were too loud for them as they only stayed a short time.

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Five: Baby Bunny

Our neighborhood is full of rabbits. We see them everywhere, and my boys are always devising plans to try to catch them, though they have not yet been successful. Recently one has taken up residence in our yard, and we scare it just about every time we pull into the driveway. But even though we've seen tons of full-grown rabbits, this evening was the first time we saw a baby. Clay was beside himself with excitement and begged me to snap some pics.

I think he thought we couldn't see him, or maybe he just hoped we wouldn't!

Day Seventy-Seven: Tail-less Squirrel

I saw something today I have never seen before: a squirrel without a tail. I was not quick enough to get a picture, but my kids are my witnesses. We all got tickled seeing the little guy run through the yard seemingly oblivious to his missing appendage. It made me wonder what purpose a squirrel's tail actually serves. It also reminded me that humans are the only creatures that get hung up on physical appearances. We would do well to imitate the animals here and just go on about our business.
